When do I need to have an MOT carried out?

An MOT is required when your vehicle is over three years old. It is your responsibility to have it booked for a test, so make sure to keep an eye on when your car was first registered if you have bought a new one in recent years. You can also check online to see when your MOT is due.

How long is the certificate valid?

Once you have had an MOT carried out by a professional and accredited garage, your certificate will then last for 12 months. Keep an eye on when the MOT expiration date is as this is when you will need to book the next test, and if you exceed this date and haven’t had it renewed then you will be breaking the law. If your MOT has expired and you’re still driving on the road you could face a fine of up to £1,000, and if you’ve been informed that your car is deemed dangerous by a professional and has failed, you could face three points on your licence and a fine of £2,500 if it’s still on the road.

Do electric vehicles need an MOT?

As electric cars need to be roadworthy, just like petrol and diesel engines, they too need to have an MOT certificate. The only difference is that they do not require an emissions test as they run on electricity. Oxstalls Service Station can carry out MOTs on both electric and hybrid cars to ensure they meet DVSA standards of safety.

How long does it take to have an MOT done?

We estimate that an MOT can take between 45 minutes to an hour to complete. During this time you can either stay in our comfortable garage reception or come back at a time which is convenient for you.
